Description[]

The Early Helladic People is the first scenario of the Greek Campaign in Empire Earth.

Briefing[]

The Early Helladic Peoples: 10,000 - 2,000 BC

A cold wind blew off the Anatolian mountains. In the foothills below, the young tribal chief, Hierakles, looked over the remaining members of his fading village. Despite their courage, they appeared ragged, tired. He knew they would not last through another bitter winter if they remained here. But where was there to go?

Thank the gods! The village shaman, Kalkas, had the answer. It was why he had gathered his people here today.

In a recent dream, Kalkas had envisioned a way to traverse the western sea. He believed the Anatolian people could cross the water to a land called Thessaly, and there they would prosper. Now, it was time for Kalkas to share his wisdom. The legendary story of the Greek peoples begins here.

History[]

The Balkan Peninsula was inhabited by humankind as early as sixty or seventy thousand years BC. These first paleolithic peoples, however, were pushed aside by aggressive migrants from other parts of Europe and Asia. It was these later arrivals who would come to be known as Greeks.

The first important wave of Early Helladic people probably journeyed from Anatolia, which is in modern-day Turkey. They settled in Thessaly, Boeotia, and Argos - but they were not permitted to do so unmolested. Considerable archaeological evidence suggests that they were attacked over and over by marauding invaders from the Danube region who probably introduced horses to the area. Ironically, thanks to these raiders from the north, Thessalonians eventually became masters of the horse themselves. For centuries thereafter, Greeks looked to Thessaly to provide them with mounted fighting men.

For protection in the short term, the Early Helladic people in Thessaly built the first fortified hill-top towns in Greece. Possibly they learned the techniques for doing this in Asia Minor, where settlements in Troas - the future site of Troy - had already experimented with building fortifications.

All Greek cities eventually adopted the custom of building fortifications situated on a walled-in hilltop. This "high-city," or "acropolis" as it came be called, is one of the hallmarks of ancient Greek civilization. The acropolis of Athens, crowned by the glorious Parthenon, has endured since the 5th Century BC as the quintessential example of this custom.

Hints[]

  • Follow the worn paths in Anatolia and in Greece. They are good indications of how to locate sites and locales you seek.
  • Build up some kind of an army before engaging your enemies in combat.
  • Using Hierakles' Battle Cry power can help turn the tide of your battles, if they are going badly.
  • When crossing the sea, be careful, as Troas will probably have sea patrols about. War Rafts or Kalkas' special powers can easily deal with them.

Objectives[]

  • Follow the advice of Hierakles and Kalkas to successfully emigrate from Anatolia to Thessaly.
  • Hierakles and Kalkas must survive.
  • Locate the hostile city of Troas.
  • Bring Kalkas to the Dock at Troas.
  • Build Transport Rafts and bring your people to the land called Thessaly, across the sea.
  • Locate the high plateau in Thessaly and bring Hierakles there.
  • Construct a Barracks and a Settlement on the high plateau.
  • Bring Kalkas and Hierakles to Thessaly.
  • Construct a Temple on the high plateau.

(Each objective after the third is invisible until the one before it has been completed.)

Losing Conditions[]

  • Hierakles is killed.
  • Kalkas is killed.
  • The dock get destroyed before Kalkas captures it.
  • You have no Citizens and cant produce anymore

Civilizations[]

Anatolians (blue)
They are the people you control in this scenario. They start off at the Prehistoric Age and are able to upgrade to the Stone Age. They start of with:

The only unit they are unable to build is the Fishing Raft. The Citizens have all their building abilites according to their respective epochs, except they cannot build Temples nor Docks until certain triggers occure (even if they upgrade to the Stone Age), Granaries, and Towers at any time.

Troas (orange)
The Stone Age city of Troas can be located a little down and to the left of the Anatolian Town Center. The Walls encircle a Town Center, a Barracks, a Temple, an Archery Range and 4 Houses. Two Towers guard the front entrance while two more guard their Dock. Around twelve Clubmen guard the shores just before the Dock, while five more and 6 Rock Throwers are inside the city. Despite its presence, they do not possess any Archery Range units. The waters between Anatolia and Thessaly are patrolled by four of their War Rafts. They have around fifteen Citizens and are unable to create any more units. Kalkas can easily destroy all the buildings within the city with a Firestorm targeted at their Town Center once the Temple is out of the way.

Dorians (green)
The Dorian village is located a long way above the plateau where the Anatolians are to settle. They have a Town Settlement, a Temple, two Stables and three Houses. The Dorians have around twelve Citizens and an army of around 20 Horsemen, some of which patrol the resources around the plateau.

Walkthrough[]

Hierakles and his people prepare for their journey

Warning: Do not read this if you wish to solve this on your own.

Have four of your six citizens to start harvesting Food from the goats in the village area, while the remaining two build a Barracks and after that send them to chop trees. Train four or five Clubmen and send them with Hierakles and Kalkas to the Gold and Iron mines south of your village. The Troans will attack this patch every few minutes with two Clubmen, but since you have twice the amount of Clubmen as well as Hierakles as a strategist hero (he will heal injured units), they do not pose a danger.

Once you have collected 750 units of food, advance to the Stone Age. If all goats near the [[Town Center (Empire Earth)|]] have been killed, you can find two small flocks of goats in the forest north of your village and another flock to the south east. Another flock can be found in the resource patch, where you "parked" Hierakles and his Clubmen. After the Stone Age has been reached, train a few more Citizens had have them harvest gold and iron. Three for each patch should suffice, if you're not in a hurry. Use the Gold and the Iron to build seven to ten Spearmen and three Sampsons. Collect more Iron and Gold to upgrade your units - hitpoint, attack and armor upgrades for the infantry units. You may want to upgrade the Sampsons' speed, so that they won't lag behind the rest of your army, when approaching enemy territory.

When you have 10 Spearmen (or add more, if you want to have an easy time), march along the way south from the resource patch. Advance carefully to avoid running into the attack area of the Towers that guard the entrance to Troas. Send your Sampsons to attack the first tower and make sure to have Hierakles nearby to heal the Sampsons, which are under fire from both Towers. Troas will send out Clubmen and Rock Throwers to defend the towers. Let the Spearmen mow down the Clubmen, while your own Clubmen make short work of the Rock Throwers,

Once the two Towers have fallen, send your army into the village and kill the defending troops. Send the Sampsons to take down the Temple. Once it has been destroyed, let Kalkas throw a match at the town center Firestorm. When the house cleaning in Troas is complete, leave the city through the south entrance and let your Sampsons attack the two Towers that guard the Dock. Make sure that your units do not attack the Dock. There are some Clubmen defending the dock, so make sure you brought some Spearmen. Do not try to destroy the Towers with a Firestorm! The Dock would be destroyed as well. Bring Kalkas near the Dock, when the Towers have fallen. The Dock will be handed over to you.

Immediately position your Clubmen in the shallow waters around the Dock. The sneaky Troans have two War Rafts hidden away near the dock and they will attack as soon as you steal the Dock. Keep Hierakles nearby for healing, while the Clubmen hack the attacking rafts to shreds.

After disposing of the two War Rafts build a Transport Raft and fill your army to the population limit with Spearmen. Upgrade the Transport with two speed and two hitpoint upgrades and maneuver it to explore the sea south of Troas. Deep in the south the Troans have hidden another two War Rafts, near the area where you are supposed to land. Once they attack your Transport Raft, make an about-face and hurry back to the dock. Due to the speed upgrade the raft can easily outrun the Troan War Rafts, who will chase it back to Troas. Position it near the Clubmen, but make sure it is within dock range. The War Rafts will stubbornly attack the Transport, ignoring your little army. Let the Clubmen have a whack at them.

When all four Troan War Rafts are destroyed there is nothing to fear anymore on the sea. Build additional Transport Raft or start shuttling your army with a single raft. For safety reasons you should let Kalkas and the Citizens stay home for the moment. Let your army land on the southernmost tip of Thessaly. Once your army is assembled, start scouting the area carefully and thoroughly. The Dorians have about 10 Horsemen in groups of three or four hidden in forest pockets throughout and around the area of the new acropolis. Let your Spearmen have a stab at them and support them with Hierakles' battle cry.

Ignore all the claptrap about building structures on the acropolis, if you want to get 10 additional civilization points and want to avoid the Dorians attacking you every few minutes. Move your army north until you wander into the Dorian village. Let the Sampsons attack the Stable at the entrance and the second one in the northwestern corner. Meanwhile, let the Spearmen deal with the domestic Dorian defence force, which entirely consists of Horsemen. Mop up the remaining buildings and any remaining Dorian Citizen and you'll have peace in Thessaly.

Move your army back to the acropolis and make sure to scan for any remaining Dorians. Now transfer Kalkas and a few Citizens to Thessaly and have them build a Barracks and a Settlement on the acropolis. Listen to Kalkas' speech and build a Temple, too. You have won the scenario.

One key point of quickly winning this Scenario is to not spend any Stones and save what you're given with to build the Temple in Plateau later in Thessaly.

As soon a the game starts, distribute existing citizens to collect food and wood first and foremost, players would want to leave for Thesally with at least a bit over 500 Woods and with enough food to produce multiple citizens.

Ignore Gold, as there are no worthwhile unit or technology that players an pursue in this scenario that would require Gold.

Attacking Troas is easier than the Scenario try to impose: the bulk of Troan army within their wall would not react to engagements happening on their South and Eastern shore, which is guarded by 2 morale-less towers and a group of Clubmen. Hierakles being a strategist hero can easily cast War Cry against the Clubmen guard so that even an engagement with slight numbers disadvantage can be victorious; Kalkas with his Malaria can make things even easier with proper use, just be wary that he should not remain long on the frontlines. The towers can easily be dealt with one-by-one as Primitve towers can only attack one unit at a time and Hierakles can heal your Clubmen faster than a single tower can deplete their health.

As soon as the Troan Dock is claimed, create one War Raft and queue up at least one Transport Raft, preferably two. The War Raft produced should then lure Troan's War Raft near the dock for advantageous engagement, two of three Rock Thrower can help make this process faster. As the War Raft patrols are mostly cleared, load up Hierakles, Kalkas, a few Clubmen and at least 5 Citizens up the transports and sail straight East, the priority is to land the group, not eliminating every existing nautical patrol. While the players are at it, they might want to leave several citizen behind to continue pooling resources in Anatolia, as the effort of transporting every citizen would stagnate resource flow and probably would warrant more expense.

After landing, make sure combatants travel the path first and the citizens follow behind, Dorians mounted warrior might appear from unexpected flank. After the plateau is found and the player still has all the Stones and recommended amount of Wood, they can easily build a temple, a barracks and a settlement, populate the settlement with enough Citizens and the scenario is easily won.

If players lack any factor for immediate victory at the plateau but has enough food at hand to play the long game (about 0ver 800) then advancing to the Stone Age is recommended for the sake of Spearmen, which are more effective against the Dorians mounted warriors.

Storyline[]

Hierakles has gathered his people near their Town Center. Their high Priest, Kalkas, stands near him.

Hierakles: My people, I have gathered you here to listen to the words of Kalkas, our wise high priest. He has seen, in a vision, a way to lead us to a land where we may prosper.

Kalkas: My people! We must travel west to a hostile village called Troas. From them we shall steal the secret of traveling upon the deep waters. Lead me to their Dock, and I will steal it for our own use. The time for emigration has come, for we will surely perish if we remain here!

The Anatolians prepare for their journey. In time, they head for Troas. When a unit catches sight of one of their buildings...

Kalkas: This is the village of Troas! Help me find their Dock so that I may seize control of it.

Hierakles: Their city is magnificent! They have much knowledge, which we shall learn - and use to build a city of our own!

Kalkas is snuck over to Troas' Dock. When he comes near enough, the Dock is converted over from Troas.

Hierakles: Now we have a Dock! Let us build Transports, then set sail for Thessaly. We will know our destination by the goats grazing there.

The Transports are built, and soon they are on their way. As they skirt along the edge of Thessaly, they catch sight of a herd of goats grazing near the shore. They disembark onto that beach.

Hierakles: At last! We have reached the land called Thessaly! But we dare not setle just anywhere. Let us search for a high plateau, where we can safely build our new village. I will know the right location when I see it.

The Anatolians move on forward, and just ahead they come across a high plateau, just as Hierakles desired.

Hierakles: This shall be the site of our new village. We must build a Settlement and a Barracks on this high plateau, as we learned from the people of Troas. A plateau is more easily defended against enemies.

If they encounter a Dorian Horseman...

Unit: My lord Hierakles! Strange warriors from the north have set upon us. And they ride horses - a most fearsome sight to behold! We must defend ourselves!

Their Citizens eagerly fall to work, and quickly erect a Settlement and a Barracks. As soon as the work is complete...

Kalkas: The gods are pleased with us! They have made known to me, in a vision, that we must build a Temple where we can worship. We shall construct this Temple on our new acropolis, in addition to the buildings Hierakles wishes us to build.

The people build a Temple as well and when it is complete...

Hierakles: The future of our new village is secure! Let us tame this land and call it our own!
